Research and public libraries often co-exist under one roof, but the distinction should not apply to the quality of the collections or to the services; the idea that services are embedded in public libraries and less so in research ones, should be discarded. Coherence must be sought in terms of practices, where contemporary books are studied and treated on the same basis as earlier printed material, with minor adjustments when crossing historical borders. New technologies are there to be exploited, with the challenge of cooperation among libraries, with shared catalogues and records that can be easily updated.
